What is the best countertop material for you? Granite v/s Quartz

When talking about the right choice for kitchen countertops, we are often left with two materials – granite (natural stone) and quartz (engineered stone). While both have a share of unique advantages, they are mainly different in their composition. Granite is a natural stone quarried from different parts of the country. It is then cut into thin slabs, polished, and fabricated into countertops. Quartz is an engineered stone or manufactured stone. Its composition includes natural quartz along with other minerals and stone byproducts.

On the other hand, quartz is more uniform in appearance as they are engineered products. However, both of these materials are available in a variety of patterns and colors.

Cost 

Undoubtedly, granite and quartz are both premium countertop materials, ideal for creating a luxurious kitchen. However, the cost of granite might range from Rs. 150 to Rs. 700 square foot, and the cost of quartz countertops falls between ₹400 to ₹1500 per square foot. Remember, the price may fluctuate according to the types, patterns and colors. 

Durability 

There’s no doubt that both materials are very durable. But granite is a porous stone that requires sealing while installation, followed by periodic sealing. Additionally, they are a little prone to cracking. 

On the contrary, quartz does not require sealing because of the presence of resins used in the fabrication of the slabs. They rarely crack during their lifetime. 

Maintenance 

Granite countertops need to be resealed at regular intervals after installation, unlike Quartz ones. Additionally, any stain on granite countertops has to be wiped quickly to ensure that it does not leave any visible mark. On the contrary, cleaning quartz countertops with a mild cleanser is enough to keep them gleaming like new. In short, quartz countertops are easier to maintain than granite. 

Real Estate Value 

There’s no surprise that both granite and quartz are high-end building materials. Thus, they will improve the real estate value of your home when compared to laminate or ceramic tile countertops. But granite can be better as it is a natural material.
